Milan Milakov won his first Yugoslavian national championship in the pole vault in 1949 and captured the title five more times through 1954, as well as in 1957. His first major international competition was the 1950 European Championships, where his jump of 3.90 was not sufficient to qualify for the final. He did, however, reach the final at the 1954 edition and placed 19th. In-between, he competed at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, where he finished 13th overall. He was more successful at the Balkan Games, where he was third in 1953, second in 1954, and first in 1956. He also won gold at the 1953 Summer International University Sports Week and broke the national record 14 times. He retired from active competition in 1958 and, after serving in the military, had a career as a physical education teacher.
Personal Best: PV – 4.32 (1956).
