Biography

Latvian sportswoman Mirdza Mārtiņšone was a versatile all-round athlete who competed in gymnastics and skiing. In 1935 Mārtiņšone took part at the student world championships in gymnastics where she came fifth individually and second in the team competition. On the snow she was a two-time Latvian champion in the 5 km cross-country race, winning the title in 1934 and 1935. As a slalom skier she won three Latvian titles (1937–38, 1940) and one Latvian SSR championship (1941).

Mārtiņšone represented Latvia at the 1936 Garmisch-Partenkirchen Olympics in the combined event but failed to finish in the slalom element. She was briefly married to the Latvian speed skater Alfons Bērziņš. After World War II she lived in Norway and covered the 1948 St. Moritz Olympics as a Norwegian journalist. By the early 1950s Mārtiņšone had moved to the United States where she remarried and lived in New York until her death.
