Biography

Rico Freiermuth burst onto the international bobsledding scene in 1982 when he won a gold medal in the four-man event at the World Championships alongside his Swiss compatriots Silvio Giobellina, Urs Salzmann, and Heinz Stettler. The quartet slipped to bronze at the 1983 European Championships, but then claimed the European crown in 1984 and 1985. Along the way they also participated in the 1984 Winter Olympics, where they finished third behind the two teams from East Germany. Freiermuth also competed in the Olympic two-man event with Ralph Pichler and placed sixth among 28 duos. After earning a bronze medal at the 1985 World Championships alongside his four-man crew, Freiermuth retired from active competition, having been Swiss national champion in the four-man five consecutive times between 1981 and 1985.
