Biography

Maurice Gover was a regular soldier serving with the REME (Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers) at the time of his Winter Olympics appearance in 1956. A sergeant, he was stationed in Germany with the BAOR (British Army of the Rhine).

As a cross-country skier, Gover finished 56th in the 15km race at Cortina. Nevertheless, he was the highest placed Briton, ahead of Andrew Morgan, John Moore, and Aubrey Fielder. The quartet finished 14th and last in the 4x10km relay. Also in 1956, Gover appeared in the World Military Ski Championships in Oslo, and won the downhill event at the BAOR and Army Skiing Championships. Two years earlier he won the trophy for being the best all-round skier at the British Army Combined Cross Country Championships.
