Biography

The son of a Dutch envoy to Germany, Willem Gevers was a diplomat and sportsman. Gevers held the title of baron and studied law at Leiden University. Along with Sam Dunlop he competed in the two-man bobsleigh at the 1936 Garmisch-Partenkirchen Olympics and finished tenth. Gevers also competed in the skeleton and won on the Cresta Run ice track in St. Moritz in 1939. After working in a bank in Amsterdam he became a diplomat working at several different embassies, including ones in Poland, Italy, and Spain. Gevers later became the Dutch ambassador to several countries, including Israel and the United Kingdom, before working at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
