Biography

Leo Gudas was a defenseman whose career stretched from 1982 to 2003, but who changed clubs frequently, playing for no less than 14 clubs in various European leagues. He was drafted by the Calgary Flames in the 12th round of the 1990 NHL Entry Draft, but never played professionally in North America. His European club odyssey was as follows: Stadion Liberec (1982-83), ČKD Praha (1983-85, 1987-90), HC Dukla Jihlava (1985-86), Dukla Trenčín (1986-87), JyP HT Jyväskylä (FIN) (1990-92), EC Hedos München (GER) (1992-93), ČKD Praha (1992-94), EHC Biel (Bienne) (GER) (1993-94), Spektrum Flyers (NOR) (1994-95), HC Kometa Brno (1995-96), IF Troja Lungby (SWE) (1996-98), EV Augsberger (GER) (1998-2000), Heilbronn EC (GER) (2000-02), and finally returning to Czechoslovakia for the 2002-03 season, his last, with HC Berounští Medvědi. In 1991 Gudas was named to the Finnish league all-star as a defenseman, and won the Matti Keinonen Trophy that year as the top defenseman in the Finnish league.

Internationally Gudas played for Czechoslovakia at the 1985 World Juniors, the 1992 Winter Olympics, and the World Championships from 1989-93, as well as the 1991 Canada Cup. He won four international bronze medals, at the 1992 Albertville Olympics, and the World Championships in 1989, 1990, and 1992. After his playing career ended Gudas went into coaching, being named assistant coach of BK Mlada Boleslav in 2008.
