An Irish distance runner, Mark Carroll ran the 5,000 metres at the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games. Carroll also competed at the 1995 and 1999 World Championships. He ran in college in the United States at Providence College, winning the 1995 NCAA Indoor title in the 5,000. He was 2000 European Indoor Champion in the 3,000 metres.
Carroll married US Olympic distance runner Amy Rudolph. They settled in the United States and he became a track coach, initially at Auburn and Drake Universities, as did Rudolph, but in 2019 he was named the high performance coach for the Boston Athletic Association.
