The high point of Yury Kharchenko’s career was the 1988 Winter Olympics, where he won a somewhat surprising bronze medal. At the 1989 World Championships Kharchenko won two bronzes in both the mixed team and team event. He also won silver at the 1987-88 World Cup in singles. Domestically Kharchenko won five Soviet titles (1983, 1985-87, 1990), one silver (1988) and two bronzes (1984, 1991), all in singles. After his sporting retirement, Kharchenko worked as a telecommunications engineer.
