Biography

Carol Anne Letheren studied physical education at the University of Toronto where she played volleyball. She later taught at her alma mater until 1970, then moved to York University, where she earned an MBA while she was on staff there. She became interested in sports administration by working with the Canadian Gymnastics Federation, serving as Vice-President from 1970-77. She served as a gymnastics judge at the 1976, 1980, and 1984 Olympics and was a member of the technical commission of the Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG) from 1976-80.

Letheren became Vice-President of the Canadian Olympic Association in 1982, became President in 1990, and then served as secretary-general from 1994-2001. She was made an IOC Member in 1990, serving on the Press Commission, Commission for the International Olympic Academy, Cultural Commission, Coordination Commission for the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympics, and the Evaluation Commission for the 2004 Olympic Games. Though seemingly in excellent health, in 2001, Letheren was giving a speech at the Business School at York University when she collapsed and died from a ruptured brain aneurysm.
