Biography

Tay Wilson started in sports at Nelson College from 1938-42 where he was a top national rower. He was New Zealand double sculls junior champion in 1959. He studied accounting and later worked as a chartered accountant in Lower Hutt. Wilson also began in sports administration in rowing, becoming chairman of the New Zealand Rowing Association and the Wellington Amateur Rowing Association. He then served as secretary-general of the New Zealand Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association from 1985-90. He also served roles in numerous regional associations, including the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC), the Oceanian National Olympic Committees (ONOC), and the Commonwealth Games Federation.

Wilson was made an IOC Member in 1988 and served until his retirement in 2005, at which time he was made an Honorary Member. He served on the New Sources of Financing Commission from 1989-93, and the Finance Commission from 1994-2006. For his service to sport he was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1989, was made a Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (DCNZM) in 2007, and in 2009 was re-designated as a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (KNZM).
