Biography

Đurđa Boroveč began her sports career as a gymnast before her coach suggested that she should take up the discus throw. The move paid off, with Boroveč becoming a three-time champion of Yugoslavia (1950, 1952, 1958) and setting a Croatian record in the discipline in 1948. Her best result came in 1956 when she threw 46.25 metres to set a Croatian record that stood for the next 12 years. One year later she won bronze at the Balkan Games before competing at the 1950 European Athletics Championships, finishing ninth. Boroveč was selected to represent Yugoslavia at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, but ultimately did not start in the event. After spending time to start a family, she returned to the sport as a veteran in 1975, winning two world championships.
