Biography

Sonya Jeyaseelan was a Canadian tennis player who played professionally from 1991 to 2004. Jeyaseelan achieved a career-best singles ranking of #48 in the world in December 2000 and a doubles ranking of #40 in the world in October 2000. In 1998 she reached her only WTA singles final of her career, but lost to Paola Suárez in straight sets at the Copa Colsanitas tournament in Colombia. As a doubles player she won two titles at the Internationaux de Strasbourg in France; the first in 2000 with Florencia Labat, with her second win coming in 2003 with Maja Matevžič. At Grand Slams her best performance came in the doubles at the 1996 US Open, reaching the quarter-finals with compatriot Rene Simpson. In 2000 Jeyaseelan competed in both the singles and doubles at the Sydney Olympics, partnering with Vanessa Webb in the latter.
