Schoolteacher Brian Bullivant competed in the 1,000 and 10,000 metres kayak pairs events at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics with Ray Blick. They finished eighth out of 12 in the long-distance event and last of nine in the sprint final. Blick and Bullivant were two of the three British canoeists at the Melbourne Games, along with fellow Richmond Canoe Club team-mate Patricia Moody.
The trip to Melbourne was also special for Bullivant, as he met his Australian mother-in-law for the first time, having married her daughter Gertrude at Devon, England, in 1951. After the Olympics, Bullivant organised coaching courses on behalf of the British canoe union before moving to live permanently in Australia.
