Alois Stadlober became one of the greatest Austrian cross-country skiers ever. He participated in five Winter Olympics from 1984 at Sarajevo until 1998 at Nagano. Although he never won a medal, he performed magnificently, placing eighth over 10 km in 1992 as his best Olympic result. Stadlober had his greatest moments in 1999 when he won the gold medal at the world championships with the 4x10 km relay and, just a few days earlier, he had won the silver medal in the individual 10 km.
Stadlober won several Austrian national titles and later married former alpine skier Roswitha Steiner. Their children Luis and Teresa Stadlober also became Olympic cross-country skiers. Alois Stadlober turned to coaching and became a sports administrator with several cross-country skiing associations. He also occasionally worked with the Austrian TV Channel ORF at cross-country events.
