Biography

Róbert Švehla started his high-level hockey career with Dukla Trenčín in Czechoslovakia in 1989, moving to the IF Malmö Redhawks of the Swedish league in 1992, playing with them through the 1994-95 season. He was drafted by the Calgary Flames in the 4th round of the 1992 NHL Entry Draft, but never played for the Flames. They traded his rights to the Florida Panthers in 1994 and he played in the NHL with the Panthers as a solid, bruising defenseman from 1994-2002. He then spent one final season in the NHL with the Toronto Maple Leafs, retiring after the 2002-03 season. Internationally Švehla played in three World Championships (1992, 1998, 2003), three Winter Olympics (1992, 1994, 1998) and the 1996 World Cup. He won bronze medals at the World Championships for Czechoslovakia in 1992 and for Slovakia in 2003.
