Biography

West German flatwater canoeist Oliver Kegel was a member of the K-4 1,000 team that finished eighth at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. In 1992, at Barcelona, he was on the gold medal winning team of reunified Germany.

Kegel won the following medals at the Flatwater World Championships: bronze in the 1981 K-4 1,000, bronze in the 1987 K-4 10,000, in 1991 gold in the K-4 500 and the K-4 10,000 and silver in the K-4 1,000, and finally in 1993 silver in the K-4 500 and two gold medals in the K-4 1,000 and the K-4 10,000 metres. Kegel was then awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award.

Kegel won numerous national titles: 1990 and 1992 in the K-2 500, in 1987 and 1990-91 in the K-2 500, from 1990-92 in the K-1 1,000, in 1989-90 and 1992 in the K-2 1,000, in 1984, 1986, 1990-91 in the K-4 1,000, in 1988 in the K-1 10,000, from 1992-94 and 1996-97 in the K-2 10,000, and 1990-91 in the K-4 10,000.
