São Tomé and Príncipe formed a National Olympic Committee in 1979 which was given official recognition by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in September 1993 at the IOC session in Monte Carlo. The country first competed at the Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996. The island nation appeared with one male and female track athlete at every edition it has attended, débuting in canoeing in the 2008 Games. São Tomé and Príncipe have not yet competed in the Olympic Winter Games, and none of its competitors has advanced beyond the first round of competition.
