Men continued to ski the basic four events – 15 km, 30 km, 50 km, and relay, but the women added a second individual event, the 5 km, to their 10 km and relay events. The 5 km had been introduced for women at the 1962 World Championships. The 1964 cross-country events were held in and around Seefeld, a small village 17 km northwest of Innsbruck, which has become an important European center for cross-country skiing. The start and finish of the events were in the Langlaufzentrum, a stadium built for the 1964 Winter Olympics. Soviet women won six of a possible seven medals, sweeping the 10 km. Klavdiya Boyarskikh became the first woman to win three cross-country gold medals at one Winter Olympics, winning both individual races, and skiing on the winning Soviet relay team.
