Fencing at the 2024 Summer Olympics

The Olympic Programme for fencing at the 2024 Paris Olympics was identical to that of Tokyo 2020, with all six standard fencing events for both men and women. Each class contested three weapons – foil, épée, and sabre – in both an individual and a team event. All the fencing events were held in the Grand Palais, formally known as Le Grand Palais de Champs-Élysées, an exhibition hall and museum complex that had been built in 1900.

Seven athletes won two fencing medals in Paris, led by Korea’s Oh Sang-Uk, who won the men’s individual sabre and led Korea to the team sabre title, and America’s Lee Kiefer, who won women’s individual foil and helped the United States win the team foil.

Fifty-three (53) nations competed in Olympic fencing in 2024, with 36 in the women’s events and 39 in the men’s events. The distribution among genders was almost precisely even, with 129 women fencing and 130 men.

Thirteen (13) nations won fencing medals at Paris 2024, with eight bringing home gold medals. France won the most medals, with seven (1-4-2), followed by Italy and Japan with five each. Hong Kong (China), Japan, Korea, and the United States all won two gold medals.

Italy won gold in the men’s team épée, which was their 50th fencing gold medal all-time, making them only the fifth NOC to win 50 or more Olympic gold medals in a specific sport, after the United States, the Soviet Union, Australia, and Great Britain, although both China (diving) and Japan (judo) also achieved this milestone at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
