The big question for this event was whether anyone could challenge the Chinese team, the 2019 World Champions and impressive winners at the recent World Rowing Cup II. Poland was seen as a possible threat, based on their runner-up status at the 2019 World event. The Netherlands also looked strong heading into the Olympic Regatta, with victories at the 2020 and 2021 European Championships to their name. The German and Italian teams had also shown strongly at the recent World Rowing Cup III.

In the preliminary heats, China, Germany, Poland, and the Netherlands moved through to the finals, as expected, with Australia and Italy joining them through the repêchage. At the end of the day, though, no one had an answer for China, who dominated the final, getting out quickly and gradually lengthening their lead on the rest of the field. It took a while for Poland to find their stride, being fourth at one point, but they finished strongly to take the silver, while Australia, perhaps a bit of an unknown factor heading in, took the bronze medal.
