The women’s Madison was again on the Olympic programme in Paris after making its début at the Tokyo Games. The race was contested over 120 laps, for a distance of 30 km, with 12 sprints (every tenth lap) and the first over the line at each sprint receiving 5 points, with the next three receiving 3, 2 and 1 point, respectively. On the 120th and last lap, those points were doubled. If a team lapped the entire field they received 20 extra points, and if they were themselves lapped they had 20 points deducted.
Great Britain’s Katie Archibald and Laura Kenny, who won gold in Tokyo, were not in Paris to defend their title after Kenny had retired and Archibald had broken two bones in her leg just prior to the Games. The defending track cycling World champions, Elinor Barker and Neah Evans (GBR), did compete in Paris, along with the Australian silver medalists Georgia Baker and Alexandra Manly.
The British pair of Barker and Evans won the first sprint, ahead of the home favorites Marion Borras and Clara Copponi, and the Italian duo of Chiara Consonni and Vittoria Guazzini. A tight race saw multiple teams winning in the intermediate sprint laps, but it was the Italian and Dutch teams who ultimately made a lap gain on the field to gain the extra 20 points each. This would prove to be crucial as, although Team GB were the most consistent team in the sprints, they failed to gain the extra lap.
On the final lap, Great Britain won the sprint to gain ten points, finishing ahead of Denmark, France, and the United States. With the lap gains from the other teams, however, they finished second to the Italian pair, with the Dutch duo of Maike van der Duin and Lisa van Belle winning bronze.
