The favorites were the Dutch tandem of Melvin Twellaar and Stef Broenink. They had won the two major events in 2023, the World Championships and the Luzern Regatta, and also won the 2022 European Championships. Other medal contenders were thought to be the Irish pair of Daire Lynch and Philip Doyle, who were bronze medalists at the 2023 World Championships in double sculls, also winning silver at the event in 2019. They had also placed third at the 2023 Luzern Regatta.
Both the Netherlands and Ireland made the final, and won medals, but they were upset by the Romanian team of Andrei-Sebastian Cornea and Marian Enache. Cornea was making his Olympic début, while Enache had rowed this event at Tokyo 2020 with another partner, placing ninth. The Romanians led through 1,000 metres of the final but were then passed by Twellaar and Broenink, only to come back strongly in the last 500 metres to win the gold by almost 1½ seconds. Romania won its 21st gold medal in rowing, and its third in men’s rowing, but this was the first medal for the nation in this event. Lynch and Doyle were well back through 1,500 metres but finished strongly to pass the USA boat and take the bronze medal.
One team that was missing was the Croatian pair of Martin Sinković and his brother Valent, who won this event at Rio 2016. They were silver medalists in double sculls at the 2023 World Championships, but now more often rowed the pair, in which they won gold medals in 2020 and 2024.
