This event featured a tough field with a number of strong medal contenders with a long list of recent championships and runner ups to their names. First and foremost were Liu Zhiyu and Zhang Liang of China, defending World Champions from 2019 and victors at a recent World Rowing Cup event. The Irish pair of Philip Doyle and Ronan Byrne had been runner ups to the Chinese in both of those events, making them strong contenders as well. Not to be forgotten were the French team of Matthieu Androdias and Hugo Boucheron, 2018 World Champions and winners of the 2021 European Championship, as well as the Dutch team of Melvin Twellaar and Stef Broenink, runner up at the 2021 European Championships, and victors of that same event in 2020.
One of the early surprises of the event was the failure of the Irish team to make it out of the preliminaries, being eliminated in the repêchage phase. As for the semi-finals, France and the Netherlands came out on top respectively, with almost identical times, staking them to be the teams to watch in the final. The first portion of the final was a tight affair with France, the Netherlands, and China, running neck and neck. As the race unfolded, though, it came down to a battle between the French and Dutch for the gold medal, with France eventually edging ahead for the victory, the Netherlands taking second, and the Chinese third.
