The field for the C-1 1000 at the 1960 Summer Olympics was fairly distinguished, as it included the defending Olympic champion in both the C-1 1000 and 10000, Leon Rotman of Romania, the 1952 and 1956 runner-up in the C-1 1000 and 10000 respectively, János Parti of Hungary, the 1952 C1-1000 bronze medalist, Olavi Ojanperä of Finland, and the 1948 Olympic runner-up and 1952 champion in the C-1 10000 Frank Havens of the United States. Parti was also the 1959 European runner-up and posted the fastest time in the opening round, albeit only 0.12 seconds faster than Ove Emanuelsson of Sweden. The Soviet Union’s Aleksandr Silayev won the other heat, while Havens performed poorly and was the only canoeist who failed to advance at the conclusion of the repêchage. Silayev had the fastest time in the semi-finals, and eliminated Ojanperä in the process, while Parti and Emanuelsson captured the other heats. In the final, the podium finishers were fairly spaced out as they crossed the finish line, with Parti winning gold, Silayev claiming silver, and Rotman taking bronze.
