The omnium was a new event at the 2012 Summer Olympics, with the men’s version designed to replace the individual pursuit, points race, and madison events from the previous Games. It had been a World Championship event since 2007 and, consisting of six different sub-events, no rider is likely to specialize in all of them, and thus no man had held the world title more than once. The reigning World Champion, Australia’s Glenn O’Shea, was heralded as a potential victor and a possible favorite, but the hometown advantage of Britain’s Ed Clancy could not be discounted, as he had been the 2010 World Champion. American Taylor Phinney may have been a contender, as the 2009 and 2010 individual pursuit World Champion. When individual pursuit was removed from the Olympics, Phinney briefly considered taking up omnium, but ultimately settled on the more financially lucrative road race and time trial.

With a time of over half a second faster than his nearest opponent in the 250m flying lap, Clancy took an early lead by winning the first event, but dropped off somewhat with an eleventh place finish in a points race won by Germany’s Roger Kluge. Bryan Coquard of France took first place in the elimination race, leaving him in first overall after the first day, following fifth and fourth place finishes in the flying lap and points race respectively. The star of the second day, however, was undoubtedly Lasse Norman Hansen of Denmark, the bronze medalist from the 2012 World Championships. He was fifth at the end of the first day, having finished fourth, second, and twelfth in the flying lap, points race, and elimination race respectively, but came back with a victory in the 4000m individual pursuit. In the 15km scratch race he placed sixth, despite crashing out early in the event and having to catch up to a leading group that had already lapped the main pack. In the final event, the 1000m time trial, Clancy put forth a brilliant effort to come in first, but Hansen’s second place finish still earned him overall gold, with the Briton having to settle for bronze behind Coquard.
