France’s Anne-Caroline Graffe was the 2011 World Champion and earlier in 2012 had won the European title. She was seeded first and made it to the final relatively easily. The second seed was the defending Olympic champion, Spain’s María Espinoza, but she lost in the quarter-finals to Serbia’s Milica Mandić, who had moved up in class after winning a bronze medal at the 2011 Worlds as a middleweight. In the semi-finals, Mandić crushed Russia’s Anastasiya Baryshnikova, 11-3, to move to the finals against Graffe. The final was tight, with little to choose for most of the three rounds but Mandić eventually prevailed in an upset, 9-7. The bronze medals went to Espinoza and Baryshnikova.
