Marjorie Gestring won the women’s springboard gold medal, although she was only 13-years-old. At 13 years, 268 days old (to be more exact), she remains the youngest Olympic individual champion among women in any sport, as of 2024. Gestring returned to the 1948 Olympic Trials and just missed making the Olympic team, placing fourth.
The silver medalist in this event was Katherine Rawls who had finished second in this event in 1932. A few days later, she would add a bronze medal in swimming, in the 4 x 100 metre freestyle relay. The bronze medalist on springboard was Dorothy Poynton-Hill. When she was only 13 in 1928, she had won a silver medal in this event. She also won gold medals on platform in both 1932 and 1936.
