This was a very easy victory for Frank Foss as he won it when he cleared 3.80 metres on his first try, and then went on to clear 3.90. He took one attempt at 4.00, but missed it, and then passed to 4.10 metres, which was re-measured as 4.09 metres, clearing it on his first attempt, for a new world record. Ed Myers, who won the bronze medal, was a bit of a disappointment as he cleared only 3.60. He had jumped 4.00 metres at the U.S. Olympic Trials in finishing second to Foss.
