The two co-favorites were Portugal’s Pedro Pablo Pichardo, who formerly competed for Cuba through 2017, and Burkinabé Hugues Fabrice Zango. Pichardo led the outdoor world list but Zango had the longest mark of the year with an indoor world record of 18.07. Defending champion Christian Taylor did not participate due to injury.
Pichardo led the qualifying with a big 17.71 as Zango almost missed the final, finishing 12th. Pichardo continued his dominance, taking the lead in round one of the final with 17.61, a mark that was good enough for the gold medal. He repeated that effort in round two and then recorded 17.98 to win by 41 centimetres over unheralded Zhu Yaming of China. Zango performed better in the final, jumping 17.47 in round three to move into second place, although Zhu would push him down to the bronze medal in round five with 17.57.
Finishing fourth was American Will Claye who had won silver medals in the event in both 2012 and 2016. Both Pichardo and Zango would return at Paris 2024, Pichardo adding a silver medal while Zango finished fifth and Zhu 10th.
