Biography

One of the most successful equestrian dressage riders in history, Isabell Werth had won 12 Olympic medals through 2021. With the dominant German team, she won six team gold medals (1992-2000, 2008, 2016, 2020), as well as the 1996 individual title. The remaining medals, all individual silvers, were won in 1992, 2000, 2008, 2016, and 2020). She won many medals with her horse Gigolo, which she rode between 1992-2000, while her 2008 Olympic medals were won with Satchmo, with Weihegold Old in 2016, and with Bella Rose 2 in 2020.

With her gold medal in 2021, Werth became only the third Olympian to win gold medals at six Olympic Games, joining Birgit Fischer-Schmidt in canoeing and Aladár Gerevich in fencing. As of 2021 she had also won medals in all 12 events she had entered, equalling the mark for most medals won while medalling in every event entered, which was also done by Paavo Nurmi in athletics and Natalie Coughlin in swimming.

As of 2021, Werth was also a nine-time world champion (five team, one individual, and three GP Special). In addition, she won two bronze medals. Werth was also a 21-time European Champion (12 team, two individual, two GP Freestyle, and five GP Special). In addition, she also won four silvers and one bronze. She also won 14 individual national titles.

Werth was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. From 2001-04 she worked with the general store company Karstadt. However, since then she distributed riding equipment through her own company.
