Dmitry Barkov was a Russian born in Finland, then part of the Russian Empire, as the son of a local merchant. He joined the ranks of the Russian Imperial Army in 1900 in the 3rd Finnish Regiment. He passed the officer’s exam in 1904 to become officer of the 22nd Eastern Siberian Rifle Regiment. With this regiment, he participated in the Russo-Japanese War, where he was wounded. In 1906 he returned to the 3rd Finnish Infantry regiment stationed in Helsinki. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant and later, during World War I, of captain.
He competed at the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, where he competed for the Russian Empire in two singles and one team event. He did not win prizes; finishing 31st in singles, then 19th, and fifth with the team. He was awarded the Orders of St. Anna and St. Stanislaus for his services in the two wars. As of 1914, he was married to a wife from Karelia and had two sons. No information is available from the time after World War I.
