Biography

Karen Fonteyne began her synchronized swimming career in the mid-1980s and won a silver medal in the duet at the 1987 Pan American Games, alongside the non-Olympian Karen Sribney. By 1991 she was competing in the team event and, with Lisa Alexander, Karen Clark, Christine Larsen, Cari Read, and the non-Olympians Charlene Davies, Kathy Glen, and Heather Johnston, won a silver medal in this discipline at the 1991 World Aquatics Championships. Partnered with Read since 1988, Fonteyne remained active in the duet and took bronze in the event at the 1991 Pan Pacific Championships. At the 1994 World Championships, the next time the event was held, the Canadian team had lost Davies, Glen, Johnston, and Larsen, but gained Janice Bremner, Kasia Kulesza, Erin Woodley and the non-Olympian Carrie DeGuerre. They finished second, and then exchanged DeGuerre for Larsen, Sylvie Fréchette, and Valérie Hould-Marchand and earned another silver medal, this time at the 1996 Summer Olympics. Shortly after the Games, Fonteyne retired from active competition. She was inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.
