Biography
Although he competed in the 200 metres breaststroke at the 1908 Olympics, Alf Davies was better known as a water polo player with Polytechnic and Middlesex. He was selected for the breaststroke at the London Games after finishing second in Olympic trial races at Kentish Town and White City. Despite the Olympic appearance being the pinnacle of his career at the time, his greatest moment came on Christmas Day 1908 when he won the coveted 45th annual Christmas Morning 100 yards race on the Serpentine in Hyde Park, London, and with it the coveted Peter Pan Cup, donated by J. M. Barrie, creator of the fictional character after whom the Cup is named.
