Biography

Eva Wittke was a member of the East German 4x100 medley relay, finishing fifth at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. She swam for SC DHfK Leipzig and was teamed nationally with Martina Grunert, Helga Lindner and Uta Schmuck. In the 400 IM she was eliminated in the heats. In 1967 and 1968 she won the East German national title in the 200 breaststroke, also winning over 100 metres in 1968. Wittke later worked as a swimming coach at the Regional Olympic Center Leipzig and with the Swimming Association of Saxony. She married her teammate Jochen Herbst and their children Sabine Herbst-Klenz and Stefan Herbst also became Olympic swimmers.
