Biography

German freestyle and butterfly swimmer Oliver Lampe, son of Werner Lampe, and nephew of Hans Lampe, won the bronze medal with the 4x200 freestyle relay squad at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, although he only swam in the heats. He reached the B-final over 200 metres butterfly and placed 12th. He also swam in the 4x100 IM relay heats, and the 100 metres butterfly.

At the 1994 World Championships, Lampe won the bronze medal with the 4x200 metres freestyle relay squad and the gold medal at the European Championships the following year. Nationally, he won four titles: over 100 metres butterfly in 1996, and 200 metres in 1995 and 1997-98. Lampe was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. He studied economics and later participated in triathlon events. He opened a currywurst-restaurant at Augsburg.
