After attending MacArthur High School in her native Decatur, Illinois, Marcia Morey went to Millikin University in Illinois, graduating in 1978. She was a breaststroker, who won seven US national titles – the outdoor 100 metres in 1973-75, indoor 100 metres in 1974, outdoor 200 in 1974-75, and the indoor 100 in 1974. Morey co-captained the 1975 United States Pan-American swim team, winning three medals, a bronze in the 200 breaststroke, silver in the 100, and a gold medal in the medley relay. During her career she set four American records in the breaststroke, two each outdoors and indoors.

After college, Morey attended Reed College where she earned a Masters in Teaching, but she then turned to law school, earning her J.D. degree from Northwestern. In 1999, she ascended to the bench, becoming a District Court Judge in North Carolina’s 14th Judicial District, centered in Durham.

In 2017 Morey was appointed a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives to fill a vacancy in the chamber. She has since been re-elected three times to serve, through 2022.
