Biography

Troy Dalbey swam for the University of Florida in 1986 and 1987, making All-American in six events in 1987. After the 1988 Olympics he transferred to Arizona State University, receiving four more All-American honors in 1991.

At the 1988 Olympics Dalbey and teammate Doug Gjertsen were accused by Korean police of stealing an expensive marble lion statue from a hotel bar. After questioning they were released but sent home by USA Swimming, and banned from competition for 18 months, although they were later exonerated.

Dalbey is mostly known among American international swimmers for his relay results. At the 1988 Seoul Olympics he won gold in both freestyle relays. Dalbey also won gold in both free relays at the 1987 Pan Pacific Meet, adding a Pan Pac gold in the 4x200 in 1991. He added a silver medal in the 4x200 free relay at the 1991 World Championships. After retiring from swimming Dalbey coached swimming for a time, but later became a managing director with UpSolar America, a solar energy company.
