Biography

At the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, the German water polo team beat Romania 8-4 in the qualifying game, but then lost all three matches in the group stage against Hungary, Soviet Union and Egypt, and was eliminated. A member of the 1952 team, Wilfried Bode also played at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics when West Germany finished sixth. In 1954 and 1958 he also played in the European Championships. In West Germany he played for WASPO 98 Hannover and won the German Cup in 1948. He won 72 international caps.

After a severe car accident he was disabled but later won a German Championship with the Disabled Club Hannover. He was married to Olympic swimmer Elisabeth Rechlin.
