Biography

Bob Weir was a British weight thrower who competed at the 1984, 1996, and 2000 Olympic Games. Primarily known as a discus thrower, he also threw the hammer at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, placing eighth, his best Olympic finish. Weir also competed at five World Championships in the discus, making the final round in 1995 and 1997. He was the 1998 Commonwealth Games Champion in the discus throw, adding bronze medals in 1994 and 2002, and won the Commonwealth Games hammer throw in 1982.

Weir attended Southern Methodist University (SMU) in the United States, winning the 1983 NCAA title in the hammer, after placing second in 1981 and 1982. Indoors he won NCAA titles in the weight throw in 1981 and 1983. Weir settled in the United States, later becoming an assistant coach in charge of throws at the University of Missouri.

In addition to his track & field career, Weir played professional football in the Canadian Football League from 1986-92 with the Ottawa Rough Riders, Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and Toronto Argonauts, had trials with a couple of NFL Teams, and competed in the 1997 World’s Strongest Man competition.

Twenty years after his finished his career, his daughter Jillian, representing her mother’s home country of Canada, won a 2022 Commonwealth Games hammer bronze medal in her father’s home city of Birmingham.
