The West German field hockey team at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics earned a bronze by medal winning the deciding game against Great Britain 3-1. In the semi-finals Germany had lost 0-1 to India. Franz Nikodem played for Flensburger HC and later for MSC Köln domestically. He was a substitute in Melbourne and made no appearances for the team. He earned three international caps in 1956.
