Biography

Sigrid Smuda succeeded Brigitte Flierl as the best West German all-round skater. After a national junior title in 1976, she won the West German all-round crown five times (1977, 1979-80, 1983-84). In addition, she won the sprint title three times (1977, 1980, 1985). Being a better short and middle distance skater, Smuda did not benefit from the re-introduction of the 5,000 metres into women’s all-round competition in the early 1980’s. She did reach the final distance twice in the World Championships (15th in 1980) and three times at the Europeans (13th in 1983).

Her four participations in the World Sprint Championships yielded two 11th places, in 1983 and 1984. Smuda was also on the Olympic team in 1980 and 1984. She had her best result in 1984, finishing 10th in the 1,500 metres. Smuda married sailor Peter Fröschl, the 1982 World Flying Dutchman Champion, and also became a marketing manager for a public company in München.

Personal Bests: 500 – 42.76 (1983); 1000 – 1:24.73 (1984); 1500 – 2:10.26 (1984); 3000 – 4:38.96 (1984); 5000 – 7:56.00 (1983).
