Biography

Sven Fischer’s international biathlon career spanned 15 years, during which he won eight Olympic medals (4-2-2) and 20 World Championship medals (7-6-7), the same number as his compatriot and team mate, Ricco Groß. Unlike Groß, Fischer managed to win an individual Olympid gold medal, winning the sprint event at the 2006 Torino Olympics.

He was also highly successful at the 1999 World Championships in Kontiolahti, winning the indiviual event, the mass start, and placing third in the pursuit. Fischer has also won the overall World Cup twice, in 1997 and 1999, in addition to eight seasonal World Cups in various disciplines. Fischer, who was known for always competing without gloves or a hat, became a biathlon commentator for German television after his retirement.
