Biography

Ray Legg started swimming seriously after World War II, when he joined the Bristol Central Swimming Club at the age of 13. He won the boys’ 100 yard scratch race at the Bristol Championships the following year. Very tall for a teenager, Legg was 6ft 3in (191 cm). In 1947 he won the Western Counties 100 yard freestyle title before going on to finish third at the Boys’ National Championships. His best finish in the ASA Championships was third in the 880 yards, just before the 1948 Olympics, where he was a member of the Great Britain 4 x 200 metre relay squad, but did not start.

The holder of many Western and Bristol titles at events from 100-880 yards, Legg later became a Bristol policeman and went on to win local and national police titles. He competed in the 110 and 440 individual freestyle events at the 1950 British Empire Games without medalling, but won a bronze in the 880y relay with fellow Olympians Donald Bland, Jack Hale and Pat Kendall.
