Biography

Fernando Henríquez, better known to the canoeing fraternity as “El Chacho”, was regarded as one of the sport’s finest exponents produced by the Canary Islands. Whilst he failed to win a medal in his only Olympics, at Montreal in 1976, he claimed the highlight of his career was in meeting the Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci at those Games. Henríquez appeared in two World Championships, finishing eighth in the K-1 at Sofia in 1977 and 10th in the K-4 at Beograd (Belgrade) the following year.
