Biography

German flatwater canoeist Ramona Portwich won the gold medal with the K-4 500 at the 1988 Seoul Olympics representing East Germany. She also won two more gold medals representing re-unified Germany with the K-2 500, partnering Anke Nothnagel-von Seck at Barcelona 1992, and with the K-4 500 in 1996 at Atlanta. Portwich also won two more silvers with the K-4 500 in 1992, and K-2 500 with Birgit Fischer-Schmidt in 1996. She also won 13 gold, three silvers and one bronze at the ICF Flatwater Canoe World Championships.

Domestically, Portwich won 13 East German and six German national titles. A graduated sports teacher, Portwich later turned to coaching and worked at the Regional Olympic Center in Hannover, and then as national coach in Austria, and finally at the Regional Olympic Center in Rostock.
