The 1984 Finn gold medal was eventually decided by an incident in the first race when American John Bertrand touched the bow of New Zealander Russell Coutts’s boat while attempting a port-tack. Bertrand was disqualified and, despite winning two races, lost the gold medal to Coutts by only 2.3 points. Coutts later achieved fame in the America’s Cup, winning the cup in 1996 aboard Black Magic 1, winning again in 2000, and then switching to a Swiss-based team, and winning for a third time in 2003. Coutts is one of only three skippers to win the America’s Cup three times, the other two being Charlie Barr and Harold Vanderbilt. Silver medalist John Bertrand is not the same sailor as, and is no relation to, Australian John Bertrand, who also later won the America’s Cup.
