Format	Round-robin pools, winner of each pool advanced to single-elimination tournament.

The favorite was Turkey’s Hamza Yerlikaya, the defending gold medalist, who had won the European Championships in 1997-99, but had not featured at the Worlds since Atlanta. In 1996 Yerlikaya had defeated German Thomas Zander in the final, but in Sydney they were drawn against each other in pool one. Yerlikaya again defeated Zander, this time by 5-1, and that was his last semi-tough match on his way to the final. The final against Hungarian Sándor István Bárdosi was close, going to overtime, and ending in a 3-3 tie, but Yerlikaya defended his gold medal on officials’ decision. In the bronze medal match, Georgian Mukhran Vakht’angadze defeated Norway’s Fritz Aanes, 4-0, but Aanes fourth-place finish would not hold, as he failed a doping test and was disqualified.
