The men’s snowboard big air was anticipated as a closely contested event, with the slate of competitors including defending Beijing 2022 champion Su Yiming of China, and Japanese stars Hiroto Ogiwara, Ryoma Kimata, and Kira Kimura. The qualification round showed Japan’s rise as one of the leaders in snowboarding, with Ogiwara leading the standings along with several other medal contenders advancing comfortably to the final, including Su.
In the final, Kimura delivered an impressive first run of 89.00, setting the tone for an extremely competitive round. Several competitors, including Ogiwara crashed attempting extremely difficult tricks. Su and Kimata remained in medal contention with strong first runs, though Kimura maintained the lead and secured the gold by scoring a 90.50 on his final run for a combined score of 179.50. Kimata completed the Japanese one-two finish, taking the silver with a respectable 171.50, and Su claimed bronze to add another Olympic medal to his résumé.
