Denmark had, with varying crews, won the 2002 and 2003 World Championships, come runner-up in 2001, and taken home a bronze medal from the 2000 Summer Olympics. At the 2004 edition the nation was represented by Thor Kristensen, Stephan Mølvig, Thomas Ebert, and Eskild Ebbesen, the latter two of whom were returning bronze medalists, while Ebbesen was also a 1996 Olympic champion. They were the favorites in the event and, particularly in the absence of defending Olympic champion France, did not appear to have any serious challengers. The nation won both its opening and semi-final heats with ease and took gold in the final a comfortable distance ahead of the Australians, the reigning Olympic runners-up, who again settled for silver. Italy, the 2002 World runners-up and 2003 bronze medalists, battled the Netherlands, the 2003 World runners-up, for the final podium spot and captured it by a mere 0.05 seconds.
