As the Olympics was aiming at gender equality, this event débuted, replacing the men’s K-2 200 metres. The reigning world champions were Sun Mengya and Xu Shixiao of China. Their main medal contenders in Tokyo were expected to be the 2017 and 2018 world champions Laurence Vincent-Lapointe and Katie Vincent of Canada, and Virág Balla and Kincső Takács of Hungary, the 2018 and 2019 World Championship silver medallists.

All of them qualified into the final, with China winning the first semi-final and Liudmyla Luzan and Anastasiya Chetverikova of Ukraine, the reigning European champions, winning the second one. In the final, China finished ahead of Ukraine and Canada, who took the bronze. This was China’s first female canoe sprint gold at the Olympics.
